The Races of Abyss Races

Angels

Beings of pure divine light, Angels sprouted from the imagination of the lord at the instant the universe came into existence.
Taught to revere humanity as their father's greatest creation, Angels value them as a whole while caring nothing from a single human life, deeming anything up to a large city to be an acceptable sacrifice.

Capable of unimaginable feats, an Angel's power is only surpassed by their father and matched only by their fallen brethren. As they retain no physical body, Angels are genderless and can appear as they choose, using a human form as a way to ease their integration with the humans on the planet.

Thought greater in numbers to that of the fallen, their weakness lies in their need to protect the humans under their guard, needing the females to procreate and create Nephilim to aid their holy crusade.

  1. Angels can appear in any form and appear wherever they so choose as long as there are no Enochian warding runes in the vicinity that could deny them access to whatever the runes protect.
  2. Though they have the ability to heal, this faculty has been severely reduced now that they are cut off from their father's grace.
  3. They are immortal. Though projectiles and piercing weapons can damage their physical form, the only physical weakness is that of warded weaponry
  4. Seeing as their bodies are touched by holy light, each Angel possesses far greater personal healing than that of an average human

The Fallen

For every speck of light, there is a darkness ready to cover it with its taint and Angels are no exception to the rule. Exiled to the ever burning fire, the Fallen Angels are punished for their allegiance to Lucifer as he waged war against their father. Nearly half of God's most dedicated, fiercest warriors joined Lucifer's cause and ravaged the land of heaven in a desperate bid to end all of humanity.

The mirror image of Angels, the fallen posses the same abilities, albeit with a darkness tainting their ever lasting souls. Their immortality fuelled by the souls burning in Hell, the fallen are only as strong as the torturous home they lived in. Driven by hunger, anger and lust, they tore from the ground and cut a swath through humanity with a fury the likes of which could not have been imagined.

  1. The fallen can appear in any form and appear wherever they so choose as long as there are no Enochian warding runes in the vicinity that could deny them access to whatever the runes protect.
  2. Though they have the ability to heal, this faculty has been severely reduced now that they are cut off from the burning fires of hell.
  3. They are immortal. Though projectiles and piercing weapons can damage their physical form, the only physical weakness is that of warded weaponry
  4. Seeing as their bodies are touched by unholy light, each fallen angel possesses far greater physical strength that of an average human
  5. As they are touched by the unholy darkness, they cannot step foot on consecrated ground, lest they be burned by their father's holy light.

Witches

In the world of Abyss, the witch is a unique human being who is sensitive to the forces around them. Within them lies the ability to create magic. They practice spells and magic rituals, drawing from a power that most are never able to tap into. It is said that Witchcraft was taught to the consorts of fallen angels; that it was an attempt to hone this otherwise untamed, unchecked phenomenon. For centuries there have been women and men who could bend their reality, harness the elements, and make some of the most impossible things…possible by sheer will. Many were persecuted, hunted and killed for their differences during The Great Purge by The Neferati.

As time trickled by, things changed but only a few true witches remain. Most of them not knowing what they are, and why they can do the things they do. Others are luckier; they are the ones whose families managed to retain their connection and knowledge of their heritage.

A witch’s arsenal is her/his knowledge and her/his skill with tools of the craft. Their greatest weakness is their mortality.

  1. Using magic drains the witch, especially with repeated tasks or complex spells.
  2. Very powerful spells and rituals should be performed with more than one witch.
  3. In game magic to attack, deflect, or evade is perfectly acceptable, however, if you want to cast a spell on another character then you need to get the players permission. You just can’t make a character fall in love, tamper with their memories, or turn them into a gerbil. Discuss it. How long will it last, what is the effect, etc.
  4. A witch’s active abilities range from psychic, to elemental, and are just in general quite broad. Not all witches can perform great feats of magic. Very powerful ones have been practicing for years, and are most likely middle aged, or elderly.
  5. Be tasteful, be creative, make it interesting, but don’t be annoying.

Nephilim

Born of both human and Angel, the Nephilim are perhaps the most useful tools in the war for humanity's soul. Born in breeding farms belonging to either camp, the Nephilim are affected by their Angel progenitor; those that are born to a fallen tend towards the psychotic and twisted whereas those born to the armies of the Lord are filled with more compassion and mercy.

The powers of a Nephilim vary greatly; from the Night-walkers that existed in folklore to Elementalists that have a mastery of nature's elements and their powers are not restricted to one side of the war, healers and psychics being found on both sides, as well as Shape-shifters and Lycanthropes.

  1. Night-walkers: Strong and fast, a Night-walker's main weakness is not garlic of sunlight, but silver injected directly into their still beating heart.
  2. Lycanthropes: A natural enemy to a Night-walker, the Lycanthropes have much the same weakness, but need only be touched by it to cause damage to their body. A Lycanthrope can only transform into one form of animal.
  3. Shape-shifters: Masters of disguise, a Shifter can re-arrange the bones in his body, as well as any other attribute they wish, to become an entirely different person. Though they cannot shift into that of an animal, they are able to impersonate almost anyone with ease.
  4. Psychics and Healers: The most vulnerable of the Nephilim, because they do not have offensive powers, Psychics can foretell the future, albeit hardly ever correctly whereas Healers have the ability to harness the Holy (or Unholy) to heal most fatal wounds, working quickly and with skill.
  5. Elementalists: Elementalists are born with the power to harness one of Mother Nature's elements. They can do almost anything with their element and are hampered only by their imagination
